Research Based Wilderness Safety and Incident Prevention

Research Based Wilderness Safety and Incident Prevention

Our founder Dr Steven Schwartz has a PhD in lost person behaviour. He is a passionate believer in the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of outdoor recreation. Dr Schwartz believes that we should encourage outdoor activity and that we should adopt a multi stakeholder approach to reducing wilderness incident trauma.

Steve offers insights that are grounded in academic study, boots on the ground experiences and many years of public speaking.

Steve was born in New Zealand and spent many years exploring backcountry wilderness locations in his home country. This love of the outdoors and a sense of adventure led Steve to spend 10 years in the New Zealand Infantry reserves.

Steve immigrated to Far North Queensland, Australia in 2011 in pursuit of academic and outdoor lifestyle opportunities. Since arriving in Australia. Steve has spent countless hours exploring wilderness spaces in and around Norh Queensland. Steve has also been active in the search and rescue space as a trainer, leader, educator and operator. He has technical rescue skills in general bushcraft, vertical rescue, swift water rescue and flood boat operations and has used these skills in search and rescue operations throughout North Queensland and Cape York.

Steve believes outdoor recreation in wilderness spaces offers many mental, physical, and spiritual health benefits. Steve also understands that outdoor recreation comes with some inherent risk. Through his academic studies Steve has learnt how to provide research based solutions to reducing site specific, location specific and behaviour specific risk. Through Wilderness Safety Steve works with clients to address these risks and to develop risk management solutions.
